COPPER West, who won the five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Boulta on Sunday by six lengths from the only other finisher, Lively Article, did so in the colours of his Midleton breeder/trainer Donal Coffey.

The newcomer, a bay by Westerner, is the first foal out of Printing Copper (by Blueprint) who Donal also bred and saddled to win a mares’ maiden at Ballydurn in April 2008 and hurdle races the following year at Killarney (May) and Wexford (October).

Printing Copper’s dam was the five time-winning Supreme Leader mare Copper Supreme whose previous produce included the blacktype performers Presenting Copper (dam of Copper Kay and Which One Is Which) and Copper Bleu. She was dam also of Give Me A Copper (by Presenting) who Donal saddled to win a five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Athlacca in May 2015 and a bumper at Cork in March this year. Give Me A Copper is now in the care of Paul Nicholls having changed hands for £270,000 at Goffs’ inaugural Aintree Sale in April. He was due to have his first start for his new connections at Exeter on Thursday.
