IT’S not that easy to enjoy a point-to-point when you have the worries of being secretary but Gill Browne had plenty of reasons to smile during the Carlow Farmers’ meeting at Borris House.

The fixture had attracted a big entry and the day was bright and sunny which helped boost crowd numbers. Added to that, Gill bred a winner on the day, Clondaw Rigger, who provided rider Shane Fitzgerald with the last leg of his treble and Michael Goff with his training double.

The Stowaway bay, who landed division two of the four-year-olds geldings’ maiden, is the third of five foals out of Gill’s home-bred Daytona Lily who Jessica Harrington sent out to win a maiden hurdle at Tramore in May 2008. Since producing Sunday’s winner, the 2002 Beneficial mare has had two foals by Doyen, a 2014 colt (now the property of Derek Pugh) and a ‘racy’ 2016 filly which the breeder plans to retain.

Daytona Lily is out of the unraced Balda Girl who Gill said she bought “cheaply enough”. That Mandalus mare produced 11 foals for the Co Carlow breeder including Daytona Lily’s full-brother Its Cruicial who won three times over hurdles and was listed-placed in an Ascot chase.

Browne is also breeding from an unraced 2006 full-sister to the pair in Midnight Benefit while her son Harry is breeding from the unraced Presenting mare Laurel Gift, a 2001 full-sister to Jessie’s Dream who numbered the Grade 1 Drinmore Chase among his six wins.

The third broodmare at Browne’s Laurel Lodge Farm is the Irish Sport Horse Liscolman Lady, a 1999 daughter of Cruising.
