WEXFORD supporters will once again surely have plenty to celebrate at The Irish Field-backed Point-to-Point Awards as they look set to collect a number of the end of season’s awards.

Barry O’Neill was presented with his first ever national title 12 months ago, and he holds a six-winner advantage over Derek O’Connor in his bid to defend the title.

Between O’Connor and O’Neill, the pair could be set to dominate the night’s proceedings. O’Connor, who already has 36 point-to-point awards in his collection, has already clinched the western title and could well add the southern and senior titles to his haul. In the south, he is five in front of John Barry, whilst a first senior title looks more assured, as he sits four clear of the side-lined Jamie Codd.

O’Neill meanwhile will likely wrap-up a second consecutive eastern title at tomorrow’s Ballymacad fixture in Oldcastle, where he would look to have an unassailable eight-winner advantage over Rob James. A first northern title is not as assured, as he holds just a three winner advantage over Mark O’Hare heading into this weekend’s racing at Necarne, with next Saturday’s final fixture in the region at Portrush likely to decide the outcome.

Two Wexford-based riders, Sean O’Keeffe and Shane Fitzgerald, will decide the outcome of the novice riders title, with O’Keeffe three in front of last year’s joint-champion going into the third last weekend of racing, whilst Wexford handlers Donnchadh Doyle and Colin Bowe sit in the top two positions in that category. Doyle is three clear of Bowe who will be looking for a fourth title in a row, with Pat Doyle still in with an outside chance just a further two winners adrift.

Sydney Paget, who has been an unstoppable force for the Tipperary handler since the turn of the year, is in pole position to scoop the champion point-to-point horse award, as he sits three clear of A Decent Excuse, whose handler Eugene O’Sullivan could be set to claim the champion mare prize with Wilcosdiana.

Coolmore are guaranteed to win the leading sire award, with their stallions filling the top four spots, spearheaded by Flemensfirth who holds an eight-winner advantage over Milan, whilst Enda Bolger’s Gilgamboa is the leading hunter chaser at present.
