CLONDAW CASTLE (IRE)

4yo b g Oscar - Lohort Castle (Presenting)

The well-bred Clondaw Castle has a strong National Hunt pedigree as he is by Oscar out of a Presenting mare, and his dam, Lohort Castle, a Galway bumper winner for Andrew McNamara senior, has a strong strike-rate with her progeny between the flags, as each of her three foals which have started their careers in Irish point-to-points, have all won their maidens within their first two starts, with her Red Devil Boys winning a four-year-old maiden at Largy for Colin Bowe, whilst Kara Loca won a mares’ maiden on her debut for Michael Winters at Kildorrery last year. The former, a full-brother to Clondaw Castle, was subsequently sold to Bloomfields for £72,000, for whom he reached a career high mark of 138 over hurdles. Clondaw Castle himself was acquired by his hander Michael Goff for €17,000 as a foal at the Tattersalls Ireland November Sale.

BIG PENNY (IRE)

4yo b m Oscar - Lady Marnay (Darnay)

Big Penny was the second four-year-old maiden success of the weekend for the stallion Oscar, who has sired six winners already this season including last month’s £250,000 Cheltenham seller Finian’s Oscar. Out of a Darnay mare, Lady Marnay who won a five and six-year-old mares’ maiden at Kilsheelan for Pat Hughes, she is a half-sister to the Grade 1 winner Coolnagorna, who also chased home the great Hardy Eustace in the 2003 Royal & Sun Alliance Novices’ Hurdle before subsequently being disqualified. Big Penny, who was purchased for €14,500 as a three-year-old at the Tattersalls Ireland August National Hunt Sale, is the second foal which she has produced, with her first offspring Lockeen Girl winning a Kilbeggan bumper for Willie Austin, and she also has an unraced two and three-year-old out of Scorpion.

COOL GETAWAY (IRE)

4yo b g Getaway - Coolnacarriga (Saddlers’ Hall)

A sixth Irish points’ success for Getaway with his first crop of four-year-olds, which includes this gelding. The fourth foal of a Saddlers’ Hall mare who won a bumper at Tralee on her debut for Sean O’Brien, she is a half-sister to 2014 Irish National winner Shutthefrontdoor, who was also sent off as the joint third favourite for the 2015 Aintree Grand National. The Co Cork handler has a close tie to the family as not only did he train Coolnacarriga to win that Tralee bumper, but he also saddled her half-sister Strong Project to win a listed chase and has trained both of her two previous foals who have made it track to date, with Cloudy Rock, a points winner and two-time track victor, the pick of the pair. This, her fourth foal, was purchased by his owner Roy Wilson for €40,000 as a store at the Goffs Land Rover Sale.

SLATE HOUSE (IRE)

4yo b g Presenting - Bay Pearl (Broadway Flyer)

The very well-bred Slate House has a page full of winners and unsurprisingly he was in high demand when passing through the sales ring at the first time of asking, with his current handler, Ian Ferguson, buying him for €44,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale. The gelding was bred by Aaron Metcalfe, the joint-winner of last season’s point-to-point breeder’s award, whose colours Slate House’s dam Bay Pearl carried when placed in three bumpers for Ted Walsh. Her second foal is a five-time points winner in Britain, and more noteworthy, her third foal, Touch Kick, a full-brother to Slate House, was a bumper winner on his debut at Wincanton in April for Paul Nicholls and Trevor Hemmings. Bay Pearl is a half-sister to a number of blacktype performers, and the two-time track winning mare Buck’s, the dam of the four-time World Hurdle winning Big Buck’s.
