4yo Mares Maiden
Malindi Bay (FR)
4yo b f Malinas – La Grande Villez (Villez)
Well bought for just €4,500 by her trainer Colin Bowe at the Goffs Land Rover Sale, Malindi Bay is the third foal which her dual purpose dam La Grande Villez has produced.
A winner on the level in her native France as a three-year-old, she went on to win three times over hurdles for Alan King before being retired to the paddocks.
By the late Villez, she is a half-sister to a number of smart track performers including American, a 157-rated chaser for Harry Fry. She also has a three-year-old filly by Network and a two-year-old colt by Lucarno.
LARGY SATURDAY
4yo Geldings Maiden
Not Many Left (IRE)
4yo b g Oscar – Lasado (Jurado)
This latest four-year-old winner for Oscar ensures that he is just three winners shy of Beneficial at the top of the leading sires table for the season and Not Many Left is a particularly well-bred individual.
With a page full of winners, being out of an unraced half-sister to Noel Meade’s star chaser Harbour Pilot, a horse who finished placed in two consecutive Gold Cups behind Best Mate. Lasado, the Jurado-sired dam of Not Many Left, has had an incredible strike-rate to date with her progeny.
Not Many Left is her sixth foal and is the fifth of that half-dozen to run, with all of her runners now having won.
With that, her three-year-old Presenting gelding which is catalogued for sale at next month’s Goffs UK Spring Stores Sale has received a timely boost.
BALLYSTEEN
4yo Maiden
Senor Lombardy (IRE)
4yo b g Milan – Killoughey Babe (Alderbrook)
A €34,000 purchase at the Derby Sale, Senor Lombardy continues the excellent recent run for Milan in four-year-old maidens following three winners in that age division over the three-day Easter weekend.
From the family of multiple track winners Glebe Lad, Stashedaway, and Away Home, he is the sixth foal which his unraced dam has produced.
She also has a two-year-old Milan filly and a yearling filly by fellow Coolmore stallion Leading Light.
DROMAHANE
4yo Maiden
First Approach (IRE)
4yo b g Robin Des Champs – Manhattan Babe (Definite Article)
Derby Sale graduate First Approach realised €40,000 in the Tattersalls sales ring as a store when being purchased by the Monbeg Syndicate.
Out of a Definite Article mare, Manhattan Babe, who was bred and trained by Tom Taaffe, she is a half-sister to one of his star horses in Emotional Moment, a horse who won 14 races and accumulated over €250,000 in a 59-race career.
Just 48 hours before the victory of First Approach, his half-brother Hidden Charmer won a maiden hurdle at Kilbeggan for Pat Doyle. He also has two younger own-brothers, one of whom who was sold to Rathmore Stud last November for €42,000.
FAIRYHOUSE
4yo Mares Maiden
Northern Beau (IRE)
4yo b f Canford Cliffs – View (Galileo)
Unsurprisingly, Northern Beau is the first Irish point-to-point winner by the 2010 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Canford Cliffs.
Not only has she a most untypical point-to-point pedigree, but her path to success was unusual, as following six unsuccessful starts on the level, she was catalogued at last November’s Breeding Stock Sale before being led out unsold.
The first foal which her unplaced dam View has produced, it has been a good month for the family with her second produce, Comrade Conrad, an own-brother to Northern Beau, making a winning debut when landing a three-year-old maiden at Windsor for Roger Charlton.
4yo Geldings Maiden
Don Lami (FR)
4yo ch g Honolulu – Toutamie (Epalo)
The sire Honolulu is a relatively new name in breeding terms on Irish shores, with the victory of the French-bred Don Lami providing him with a 100% strike-rate in Irish point-to-points, as he is his first runners between the flags, and just third runner in this country. All three, which include Willie Mullins’ 139-rated chaser Bellow Mome and the Barry Connell-owned Adimelo, have enjoyed track success here.
Standing at Haras de Corlay, he made plenty of headlines during his racing career here in Ireland with Aidan O’Brien, winning a Group 2 contest and also the 2008 Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.
