KANTURK’s Bryan Carver landed a double last Sunday at Wadebridge which he initiated in the eight-runner men’s open on the John Heard-trained Navanman on whom he also won at Buckfastleigh on the opening day of the season.

The 5/4 favourite scored by two lengths from another Buckfastleigh winner in Broadclyst whose owner, Sue Trump, won the restricted with the Carver-partnered Raddon Top, a five-year-old Getaway gelding trained by Leslie Jefford.

David Prichard, assistant trainer to Kayley Woollacott, matched Carver’s double on horses saddled by Neil McLean who is now in charge of the pointers at the Woollacott yard. The pair won both divisions of the three-mile maiden, filling their brace with Timmy Hyde’s former charge Shelcomeonfordrun.

The five-year-old Flemensfirth mare is out of Hazel Sylph (by Executive Perk), an own-sister to Young Snugfit and dam of the Grade 2 hurdle winner Abbey Lane (also by Flemensfirth).

There were two other Irish-bred winners on the seven-race card, the nine-year-old Garuda gelding Rockinrolldixie who claimed the opening conditions’ race for novice and veteran riders and the year younger Marienbard gelding Double Captain, winner of the four-runner ladies’ open.

The Carmarthenshire hunt was due to hold a first point-to-point at Ffos Las racecourse last Sunday but it was called off three days earlier due to excessive rain and will now take place on Saturday next, December 22nd.
