When do the preparations for the point-to-point begin?

The preparations begin roughly four weeks leading up to the event. We have a large committee of 30-40 members. The Bruff point-to-point is run in afflilication with the Co Limerick Foxhounds.

The week leading up to the point-to-point is very busy with the final preperations being made to ensure the day is run smoothly and the public enjoy their day.

Does the ground get very damaged by the racing?

Not necessarily at this time of year. Of course it is all weather dependant. But we are hoping we will be blessed with a dry day! A course inspector checks the course two days prior to the event to ensure the ground is in good enough condition to go ahead with the point-to-point. There are a couple of different hunt clubs who run their point-to-points at the Rathcannon track so it is important that the ground is well cared for.

What are the costs involved in organising and running a PTP?

There are extensive costs when running a point-to-point. The grant from the Turf Club of €10,000 is a great incentive, however the costs of setting up and the running a point-to-point do not stop at €20,000. The cost of insurance alone is phenomenal. The expenses of hiring the fences is a large overhead, costing €2,700 just for the day.

It is vital that we have ambulances on site and of course the hiring of the loos is another important expense!

Do you struggle to source volunteers?

Although we have a large committee, we are always on the lookout for more volunteers. The local people of Bruff are great and really rally together to pull off a successful and enjoyable event.

As it is all non-profitable it can sometimes be difficult to find people to give their time but we are very fortunate that the local people involved return each year with all hands on deck. The race track is located in the heart of Limerick’s renowned racing names. Trainer Enda Bolger is based only three miles from the track in Howardstown House, Bruree, and we are fortunate enough to have him to help us out. Alongside proud Limerick horse man J.P. McManus who is a great support to us here at Bruff point-to-point.

How long have you been involved in the PTP industry? Have you witnessed many changes?

I have been involved in the organising of Bruff point-to-point for the last 15 years. I certainly have witnessed many changes in the last couple of years to include heightened safety. Safety has become paramount in the running of any point-to-point. It is also a key factor of the course inspection.

Are there any changes or improvements you would like to see made?

The race track at Rathcannon was orginally designed by Enda Bolger so in terms of location and design of the track we are very happy. However in terms of change, I think it would be nice to see more young people of the community involved and volunteering.
