THE famous Co Tipperary training establishment which was home to the late Edward O’Grady and a long list of top-class racehorses has been placed on the market.
Set on over 200 acres of Golden Vale land, the property known as Killeens includes 76 boxes, seven gallops, two arenas, two horse walkers and a Georgian-era five-bedroomed house,
It is for sale by private treaty through Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes and the asking price is €3.25 million.
The purchaser will be getting more than the land and facilities - they will be buying racing history.
Killeens is no more than 10 minutes from Thurles, Horse And Jockey and Coolmore Stud. Edward O’Grady and his father Willie trained here for 90 years. Edward trained 18 Cheltenham Festival winners, many of them for J.P. McManus, and one of his first was the novice hurdler Golden Cygnet (1978) who, even today, is still regarded as one of the greatest hurdlers of all-time.
Facilities include a 12-furlong grass gallop with a steady climb which is described as ideal for training. There is also a straight seven-furlong all-weather gallop, a straight seven-furlong grass gallop, a wide straight seven-furlong grass gallop, an uphill five-furlong grass gallop with fences, a seven-furlong all-weather circular gallop, and a three-furlong straight all-weather gallop leading to a circular gallop.
There are 31 stables in the main yard and 45 in the rear yard.
While the main residence and gardens are included in the property, there is an option to expand further by purchasing the adjacent three-bedroomed house (Lanespark). Described as an ideal manager’s house, it has an asking price of €250,000.
