CHARLES and Philip Byrnes will appear before the Referrals Committee on Monday, December 15th to participate in an investigation into a claiming hurdle race run at Wexford on May 28th. The race had a controversial finish which saw Philip Byrnes unseated from the Charles Byrnes-trained Redwood Queen at the final flight when looking to hold a winning chance.
BRITISH apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes was found dead at home in Newmarket this week. He was just 19. Based with trainer George Boughey, he had ridden almost 60 winners in the past three seasons.
A joint statement from the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) and the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) read: “It is with deep sadness that we report the death of licenced apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, 19, who tragically died at home this morning near Newmarket. His parents Jeremy and Tonie ask that their privacy is respected at this terrible time.”
