SUNDAY’S finale, the Grade 2 Coolmore N.H. Sires Los Angeles Irish EBF Mares Bumper, provided the most memorable final 100 yards of the day. Finny Maguire travelled with supreme ease turning for home on Martin Hassett’s 20/1 shot Moonverrin, virtually hacking past the 9/4 favourite, while Tiktok Casey (28/1) stuck doggedly to her task behind her.

Having been out of contention and struggling on the home turn, Stuart Crawford’s Royal Hillsborough then powered up with a strong challenge as Moonverrin hung towards the stands. Maguire’s mount regained concentration, but the deciding factor was Royal Hillsborough’s rider Stephen Connor mistaking the 50-yard marker for the winning post.

Moonverrin got up to win by a short-head on the line, with another length and a half back to Tiktok Casey in third. Connor was given a 14-day ban for his mistake, while Adam Ryan was given a five-day ban for using his whip with excessive frequency on the third horse.

Despite the dramatic finish and her big price, there was plenty of merit to Moonverrin, and she was overpriced in hindsight, having finished second on debut against geldings, before beating a point-to-point winner next time out.

Moonverrin had previously defied big odds when runner-up on debut against geldings, before going one better at Cork last month. Hassett had been full of praise for her then, as he was on Sunday. “I still think we don’t know how good she is. The way we train them at home, up the hill, we don’t ever drill them.

“It’s our first graded winner and it’s special, especially at the Dublin Racing Festival. The young lad warned me ‘don’t mention Cheltenham!’ so we’ll probably wait and see. She’ll probably get an entry but whether she goes or not time will tell.”
