Ride of the day
Billy Lee has shown his magic around here before on the likes of One Cool Poet and his last-to-first effort on Lady Arwen was a thing of beauty to watch in the finale.
Performance of the day
For all that main market rival Love Me Tender failed to really get involved from behind, it was a likeable chasing debut from Frankie John in the beginners’ chase. He can go on to better things and beat a useful yardstick in Bowensonfire.
Market mover of the day
Eddie G was one the market got very right. Having been available to back at 9/1 in the morning, he rewarded his supporters comfortably as 7/2 favourite. A number of layers reported being stung by Frankie John, returning at 15/8 from an opening ring price of 3/1.
Market support for Paddy Twomey’s newcomer The Good Wife went amiss on the day. She was sent off 4/1 (from 10/1 in the morning and 13/2 in the ring) before finishing sixth to Samnina.
Likewise, early shows after declarations of 20/1 for San Aer proved wide of the mark. He was priced at 8/1 on the morning and returned the 11/4 market leader, only to be nabbed close home by Lady Arwen after trading very short.
Leave In Secret (third in handicap chase) didn’t go unbacked at 11/1 (from 20/1), while Uncle Goalie (SP 11/2 from a morning price of 11/1) filled the same position behind Sindagan.
In-running
carnage of the day
Madam Secretary looked to have edged the verdict in the fillies’ maiden only to be reeled in late by Samnina. The runner-up, sent off 3/1, hit close to 1/4 in the closing stages.
Even more dramatically, though, the slow-starting Lady Arwen (SP 12/1) could have been backed at 59/1 on the exchanges in-running before gunning down San Aer (11/4), who almost went as low as 30/100 late on.
Leave In Secret (11/1) traded at evens in the handicap chase won by Tell Us This before dropping to third, the same in-running price as second-placed Almeiyda (6/1) when runner-up in the three-year-old-and-up maiden.
Eyecatcher of the day
Without having any excuses in defeat, it was a big showing from Dermot Weld’s Silver Kiss when a close-up third in the two-year-old fillies’ maiden. The form of her Fairyhouse debut has been given a big boost since and she looks nailed on to win a maiden before tackling bigger targets.
Stat of the day
11101 - Those are the form figures for trainer Conor O’Dwyer in an eight-day spell after Lady Arwen got up in the nick of time following a troubled start. His horses really are on fire.
Quote of the day
“Oh the green and red of Sindagan” - Quick-witted Co Kerry commentator Jerry Hannon keeps the western crowds happy with a nod to the Mayo footballers when Sindagan crossed the line in front, sporting the Aga Khan silks.
