KOKTAIL Brut (13/2) bagged his second Grade 2 victory of the season in the Donohue Marquees Novice Hurdle for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud. Jack Kennedy’s mount won the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle over course and distance of two miles in November, and had since run at Grade 1 level, a fourth-placed effort his best.
Dropping back down in grade, he led from three out and was joined by Royal Bond runner-up Blake and Donagh Meyler at the next flight. His regular rival came down at the last, leaving the winner clear to beat Ebony King by nine and a half lengths.
“He’s a good horse and was giving a penalty away there,” said Elliott. “He was bought to be a big chaser down the road; he’s a gorgeous horse.”
For jockey Donagh Meyler, his Easter Sunday egg was of the curate’s variety as he rode winners either side of a pair of last-flight falls when in with every chance.
Meyler doubled up when Come Walk With Me (9/2) took the Listed Boylesports Novice Handicap Chase over two miles and half a furlong.
Longtime leader
When longtime leader Anotherway came down three out, Come Walk With Me was left in front and he stayed on well to score by 10 lengths from Moudan.
Winning owner and trainer Eddie Cawley, one of the sponsors on the card and so often a man to follow at his local track, remarked: “It’s a nice day to have a winner and we always knew he had a lot of ability. “We’ll look at something in Punchestown.”
Meyler rode the first leg of his double aboard Colcannon (5/2), as Noel Meade’s classy bumper performer got off the mark on his fourth start over flights in the Ryan’s Cleaning Maiden Hurdle.
Bred by Philip Meade, and owned by a syndicate in his name, the six-year-old travelled strongly throughout and kept on to win by three and three-quarter lengths from Brother Walfrid.
The winning trainer said: “To be honest he’s been very disappointing up until now. I’d say ground is a lot to do with it and when he gets it a bit quicker, he’ll be even better.
“It’s taken him a while to learn how to jump as well. We’ll be able to continue on with him for the summer.”
