DYLAN Browne McMonagle bagged a treble at Fairyhouse last Friday night with the impressive Duckadilly the highlight of the trio. The Danny McLoughlin-trained filly returned from 13 months off the track to make it two wins from two starts.

She went to post a 6/1 shot in the Pat’s Carpets Race and tracked the leaders early in the seven-furlong conditions event.

The daughter of Churchill was pulled out to get a run over a furlong from home and showed a smart turn to foot to collar Bravais in the last 100 yards for a cosy two-and-a-quarter-length success.

McLoughlin said afterwards: “She’s a filly that I’ve had an awful lot of faith in all the way through. I was minding her a lot as I always held her in very high regard.

“She’s a four-year-old but it’s still only the start with her. Dylan said that she’s a very good filly and that she’d have no problem going through the grades.

“The plan was to run in the Kooyonga last week but Ben (Coen) said to go to the winners race and then go to the Brownstown (Stakes at Leopardstown, July 10th). We’ll probably go there now for a Group 3, fillies only.”

Initiating the haul

Browne McMonagle had opened his account on the night when I Bid You Ajou completed a hat-trick of wins at the course in the Maher Tractor Sales Handicap.

The Mark Fahey-trained gelding had won an optional claimer at the track late last month before following up in handicap company eight days later.

He went to post 7/2 favourite and battled gamely in the closing stages to repel the challenge of Sounds Like A Plan by a neck.

“He was very tough, his form has been rock solid and he loves it around here,” said the winning rider. “He jumps and travels, he’s a very straightforward horse. He does nothing flash but digs deep when you need him.”

Browne McMonagle completed his haul when teaming up with boss Joseph O’Brien, aboard Delta, in the Irish EBF Median Auction Maiden. The Qatar Racing-owned colt was sent off even-money favourite and led over a furlong out before holding the late challenge of Edelak by a head.

Stable representative Michael Halford said afterwards: “He battled well. He had the form to win. Dylan liked his attitude and said the stronger the race probably the better he’d be.”

Tormey makes winning breakthrough

A DASH to Fairyhouse after sitting one of her Leaving Cert exams proved fruitful for Sadhbh Tormey as Are You In Or Out gave her a first career winner in the La Bucca Restaurants Handicap.

The Paul Stafford-trained filly was to the fore throughout in the six-furlong contest and the 13/2 shot pulled clear in the closing stages for a three-and-a-half-length success over Jackandthefox.

Tormey said afterwards: “I couldn’t believe it, it was unbelievable. I’m apprenticed to Tom McCourt. I started off riding out for Paul and he got me into Tom’s. Tom has been very good to me this season and I’m very grateful for all my opportunities.

“I’m delighted to get my first winner for Paul, it means so much. Hopefully after today I’ll get a few more rides.”

Cosy winner

The card started with four races over six furlongs and Arugam Bay handled the step up in trip well in the opening Irish EBF Auction Series Maiden.

Jamie Powell produced the 6/1 shot to lead inside the final furlong and she was a cosy winner at the line as Cortina D’amprezzo finished well to get within a neck.

Patrick Harty, who trains the Soldier’s Call filly in partnership with his father Eddie, said: “We’ve always liked this filly. Michael and Louise (Roe) bred her, they couldn’t get four grand for her at the yearling sales before Christmas and fair dues to them they put her into training.

“She’s very fast and there is a listed race in Tipperary in a fortnight’s time, we’ll have a look at that depending on how she comes out of the race.”

Midnight strikes again despite weight hike

MIDNIGHT Horizon defied a hike for her win at the Curragh nine days previously when lunging late to land the Comer Homes Handicap.

The Denis Hogan-trained filly had gone up a stone for her initial success but quickened smartly again to get on top in the closing stages for a length and a quarter success under Joey Sheridan.

Sheridan said of Patrick O’Brien’s filly: “She jumped well, I thought we went very hard early. I saw the favourite in front and I said if they keep this up hopefully we might peg them back.

“I was flat out and I gave her a chance. I just let her float away into the race by herself. It’s dead ground and they are not finishing today unless you ride them to finish. It worked out well for us anyway.”

Following up

Another to follow up on a cosy win last time out was Fervent in the concluding Kate O’Sullivan Handicap, over just shy of a mile and a half.

The Stuart Crawford-trained gelding has scored over 10 furlongs at the course the previous week and was 9/4 favourite to overcome a wide draw, up in trip. Seamie Heffernan soon had his mount tracking the leaders and he led inside the final furlong to beat Tatum by a length and a quarter.

“He won well last week and the Crawfords were very happy that he came out of the race well,” said Heffernan.

“We didn’t think stepping up another two furlongs would be a disadvantage and he’s backed it up. He’s probably matured and strengthened a lot from last year to this year. Hopefully he keeps improving.”
