TRUSTYOURINSTINCT justified 5/4 favouritism in fine style in the Listed Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Orby Stakes, drawing four lengths clear under Dylan Browne McMonagle. Shaken up turning for home, the chesnut passed Paddy Twomey’s French import Magical Hope (4/1) before the final furlong and was soon in command.

Joseph O’Brien’s progressive gelding won a Group 3 at last year’s Irish Champions Festival and returned to finish third on his first two starts this season, most recently behind Los Angeles in the Group 2 Mooresbridge Stakes.

“This a lovely horse,” said the winning trainer. “He’s very consistent, loves it here at the Curragh and I’m delighted to have a winner for J.P. [McManus]. This is a homebred of J.P. and Noreen’s, so they’ll get an extra kick out of that.

“He always turns up and runs his race. He’s a very solid listed/Group 3 horse and earns his way every year. We’ve run him internationally before and we may look at that again at a later date.”

Step up in class

Connections will now seek blacktype with Apercu after Andy Oliver’s mare came out on top in a thrilling finish to the €50,000 Tulfarris Hotel And Golf Resort Handicap.

The 92-rated five-year-old was sent off 9/1 under Billy Lee and after racing close to the pace, took up the running two furlongs from home. The Team Valor-owned mare dug deep when longtime leader Cloud Seeker battled back, rallying to prevail by a short head

Joined by son Tom, the winning trainer commented: “Billy knows her well and gave her a great ride. He said himself that he probably got there a bit early, but she was enjoying herself and going sweetly.

When the horse came back at her, she kept trying. She wears her heart on her sleeve.

“She’ll go up for that, so blacktype will be the plan. Mares, when they stay in training and start to improve, you never know. What’s good about her is she just does enough, she’s a great doer at home and brings it to the racecourse.”
