Curragh gains Japan betting opportunity

THE Curragh has been informed by the Japan Racing Association that eight Curragh races will be eligible for simulcasting and wagering in Japan in the event of them attracting a Japanese runner.

The relevant races are the five classics, the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Pretty Polly Stakes and Flying Five.

Curragh CEO Brian Kavanagh said: “We’re pleased to have the Curragh races included in the expanded Japanese list. We have always enjoyed a positive relationship with the Japan Racing Association and the links between the industries in Ireland and Japan are strong.”

Should the Curragh successfully attract a Japanese-trained runner, the eight-hour time difference between Ireland and Japan will not help the Curragh’s cause but the Curragh is already deriving significant benefit from its World Pool races, despite Hong Kong being seven hours ahead of Irish time.

It was confirmed this week that part of both days of Irish Champions Festival will again be included in the World Pool next month. For the first time, the Doncaster St Leger - which clashes with the Irish Champion Stakes - will also be included.

The Haydock Sprint Cup and Newmarket’s Fillies’ Mile and Sun Chariot cards have also been given World Pool status for the first time.
