Coul Angel could bid to follow up his win at the Curragh on Sunday in the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup this weekend.

Mick Appleby’s four-year-old will carry a 5lb penalty in the £180,000 feature should he turn out again quickly, having fairly bolted up in the Bold Lad Handicap on day two of the Irish Champions Festival.

Ridden by Tom Marquand, Coul Angel, who had gone close twice at York in valuable races prior to his Irish venture, won what was supposed to be a competitive handicap by almost three lengths.

“I don’t know if he’s going to run as yet as he’s just on his way back now,” said Appleby on Monday lunchtime.

“When he gets back we’ll see how much weight he’s lost, how fresh he looks and make a decision later in the week.

“He won very well. He’d run very well at York the twice before that and he was beaten by the draw twice there. He’d been knocking at the door so it was no surprise he won a big one.

“We’ve left Annaf in as well. He ran very well in the Portland last week so that was a return to form for him.

“There’s a good chance they both might go up to Ayr, you may as well have two good chances as one.”

William Haggas’ Binhareer is the only horse ahead of Coul Angel in the ante-post betting having run well in Group Three company last time out.

Shergar Cup winner Tuco Salamanca, last year’s winner Run Boy Run and Andrew Balding’s Dance In The Storm are others left in the annual cavalry charge on the west coast of Scotland.
