QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES
NO one is likely to call Pallasator a gentle giant. There have been too many mulish displays for that, especially in his long spell with Sir Mark Prescott, when he often looked capable of winning a major long-distance race – indeed, he was beaten only just over a length by Big Orange in the Goodwood Cup two years ago.
Horses leaving Sir Mark to go hurdling invariably do well and Gordon Elliott soon worked his magic with Pallasator, winning at Leopardstown and Fairyhouse with him before attempting the Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown, where he was far from disgraced, if unplaced.
Back on the level, and with Elliott making his first visit to Royal Ascot – he missed Commissioned’s victory in this two years ago – Pallasator (11/2 from 8/1) liked everything about the closing Queen Alexandra Stakes and won quite tidily for Jamie Spencer.
Even here there was a late scare, however, as this massive specimen veered sharply left and then back again after taking it up before the furlong marker.
He still had enough in hand to beat Willie Mullins’ 40/1 chance Renneti by a length and a half, with Count Octave inches behind.
“Sir Mark recommended a change of scenery so he came to me, he’s here today and it’s great. Jamie’s given him a great ride and we can have some fun with him now,” Elliott said.
No doubt the marathon Ascot Stakes over Goodwood’s two miles and five furlongs will make some appeal, but plans for Mullins’ Thomas Hobson remain flexible.
He was made 11/8 favourite with Ryan Moore on top but made only laboured progress in sixth after finding himself short of room. He is far better than this.
