DYLAN Thomas, who now stands under the Coolmore National Hunt banner at Castle Hyde Stud, sired the winner of Germany’s final classic of the season, the Deutsches St Leger, at Dortmund last Sunday.

The 14-furlong Group 3 race, open to older horses as well as three-year-olds, was run on good ground and produced a clear winner in Sweet Thomas.

The six-year-old gelding is trained by Andreas Suborics and was ridden by Stephen Hellyn.

This was the biggest training success to-date for Cologne-based Suborics, who retired from race-riding and began training two years ago. Sweet Thomas joined his yard earlier this year and the horse produced a lifetime best performance to win last Sunday, as reflected by his odds of over 10/1. British runners Eddystone Rock (John Best) and Brandon Castle (Archie Watson) were unplaced.

Connections have decided to play up their winnings by supplementing Sweet Thomas for a Group 1 race at Cologne on Sunday.
