Richard Hannon is on record as saying that Ivawood is the stable’s most exciting juvenile and there is no reason to query his optimism following a comprehensive victory in the Group 2 Qatar Bloodstock Richmond Stakes.
Starting at 2/5 on, the Zebedee colt thrashed the opposition, easily pulling clear when Richard Hughes pressed the button. In the end he had four and a half lengths to spare over Louie De Palma, with Jungle Cat third.
Ivawood accounted for Jungle Cat even more readily than in the July Stakes at Newmarket and is clearly going the right way. He is already a big, well-grown colt, which is interesting because his sire was not that much bigger than a pony and Richard Hannon senior retired him after a successful juvenile campaign.
“Physically he looks streets ahead of a lot of two-year-olds,” Hannon junior remarked. “We’ll probably keep him at six furlongs, although seven is an option and he looks a Guineas horse until proving otherwise. He’ll go for a Group 1, the Prix Morny or the Middle Park or the Dewhurst, though the Morny comes rather soon. I don’t like to say he is our best two-year-old but he is certainly up there. He has lots of speed and much more scope than Zebedee had.”
Hannon and Hughes were breaking their duck after various bits of bad luck on the opening two days.
“Yes, this is a happier occasion but the other horses have run well and we were very proud of Toronado yesterday. I’m a very lucky man and have nothing to be sad about. I’m delighted to have a first Glorious Goodwood winner.”
Ivawood was quoted at 8/1 for next year’s 2000 Guineas by Paddy Power and William Hill, but 10/1 was available with Betfred.
