THERE was another classic success for Galileo at a lesser level last Sunday when Tuscan Gaze won the Group 2 137th Derby Italiano Universita Campus Bio-Medico di Roma over a mile and three furlongs at Cappanelle in Rome.
The colt was sent off favourite and Tuscan Gaze won by a nose from the Mark Johnston-trained King’s Caper (Frankie Dettori), with Masterwin a length and a quarter back in third in a field of 13. The winner was ridden by Carlo Fiocchi for trainer Luciano Bietolini and owners Mag Horse Racing Srl.
The colt had been in the ownership of Lady Bamford and the Coolmore partners until Royal Ascot and the win was a success for former jockey Freddie Tykicki who noted the colt when he saw him in action for John Gosden last year and was approached by the owners’ representatives looking for an Italian Derby type colt this summer.
He by Galileo out of Crystal Gaze, a Rainbow Quest mare who has, among her 10 winners, produced the group-winning sprinters Spirit Quartz and Caspian Prince.
Galileo is also responsible for a previous Derby Italiano winner, Cima De Triomphe.
