THERE was no luck for Frankie Dettori in his bid to win the Group 2 140th Derby Italiano on his final ride in the race last Sunday.
Dettori partnered his Italian 2000 Guineas winner Vero Atleta but could only manage fourth, beaten over three lengths.
Victory in the mile and three-furlong contest went to Goldenas, an Irish-bred son of Golden Horn who won by a length a half from Winning Spirit and Relentless Voyager.
The winner made smooth headway under three furlongs out, led over two out and ran on, asserting near the finish for jockey Dario Di Tocco and trainer Endo Botti, to come out best in the 12-runner field. The colt, bred by Austin Curran, had been a €23,000 purchase at the Goffs Autumn yearlings in November 2021 when offered from his Blackberry Road Stud.
Dettori was among the winners when he took the earlier Group 3 Premio Carlo d’Alessio for older horses over a mile and a half on the odds-on favourite Tempesti, a son of the Deep Impact horse Albert Dock trained by Riccardo Santini
The other feature race on the card was the Group 2 Premio Presidente Della Repubblica - Universita’ Campus Bio-Medico over a mile and a furlong where the French-trained favourite came with a strong run to get up by a head under jockey Antonio Orani. It was the much-travelled eight-year-old’s third Group 2 win at the Cappanelle. He is also a Group 1 winner in France and Germany for trainer Jerome Reynier.
