LOCAL trainer Stefano Botti saddled the first three home in the Derby Italiano in Rome last Sunday. It was his third consecutive victory in the 11-furlong Group 2 ‘classic’ and the first two home in this year’s renewal are owned by Felice Villa’s Scuderia Effevi.
The winner, Goldstream, came into the race on a winning streak of four and ran out a three-length winner under Cristian Demuro. Goldstream is a son of the Marju horse Martino Alonso, also sire of Rakti.
Runner-up Sound Of Freedom, an Irish-bred filly by Duke Of Marmalade, had also won her four previous starts, including the Italian 1000 Guineas. Just half a length behind her in third spot was the colt Time Chant (by War Chant).
Botti had six of the 15 runners in the race. There were two German challengers but both were well beaten.
There were two Irish-bred Group 3 winners on the Capannelle card last Sunday. Last year’s Italian Derby winner Dylan Mouth strolled to success at short odds in the 12-furlong Premio Carlo d’Alessio for owners Scuderia Effevi. He recorded a very fast time and his next target is the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano at San Siro in mid-June.
The Hyland family’s Oghill House Stud in Monasterevin, Co Kildare, bred the day’s other Group 3 winner, Falest. This six-year-old by Refuse To Bend won the six-furlong Premio Tudini by a length.
