JAMIE Spencer is on the crest of a wave. Having broken through the 2,000 winner barrier the previous day in the Shergar Cup, he landed a double at Deauville and made all the running on both occasions.
Riding Mythical Magic for Charlie Appleby, he defeated another Godolphin juvenile Cascadian (the odds-on favourite), trained by Andre Fabré, in the Listed Prix Francois Boutin. The colt is now undefeated in two races and Appleby is already thinking about such races as the Dewhurst Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy.
A little later in the afternoon, Spencer repeated the tactics to win the Group 3 Prix Minerve for Luca Cumani and this victory had a special significance for the Italian. The clue may be in name of the winner God Given, who was winning a hat-trick and is certainly improving with every outing.
Spencer set a sensible pace and quickened things up early in the straight. By the furlong marker, the result was never in doubt and God Given came home with something in reserve and nearly two lengths in front of the outsider Calayana. Cumani commented: “This victory has a special taste. Postponed was taken from my stable and now his sister (half) has won a group race for me.
“She enjoyed the soft going but can act on better ground. The longterm plan has always been to run her in the Fillies and Mares at Ascot in October and now we could take in the Prix Vermeille next month. I am so grateful to the owner Andrew Stone (St Albans Bloodstock Ltd). God Given is truly beautiful.”
