SUNDAY’s other two pattern events, the Group 3s of the Qatar Prix du Pin and the Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert, provided clues for a pair of Group 1s on the Arc undercard, the Prix de la Foret and the Prix de l’Abbaye.

City Light is Foret-bound after trimming more than a second off the race record time in the seven furlong Prix du Pin [see Time Will Tell column]. Trained by Stephane Wattel, he also underlined his appeal as a stallion as he has been purchased by Haras d’Etreham, where next year he will become the first son of Siyouni to stand at stud.

City Light narrowly missed out on a marquee success when touched off by Merchant Navy in the 2018 Diamond Jubilee Stakes but he has proved his ability at both five furlongs and seven and ought to prove popular with broodmare owners.

Trained in England by Kevin Ryan, Glass Slippers achieved the difficult feat of coming from last to first over ParisLongchamp’s speedy five-furlong track and catch her fellow British raider, Shades Of Blue, in the last few strides of the Petit Couvert.

Winning owner-breeder Terry Holdcroft, of Bearstone Stud, said: “We entered Glass Slippers in the Prix de l’Abbaye so that we could dream a bit. After this win I believe that the dream could become reality.”

Beware of the Devil

THERE were two more Group 3s at Maisons-Laffitte on Monday and the Freddy Head-trained juvenile colt Devil paid a compliment to Earthlight when landing the six-furlong Prix Eclipse. Victory looked unlikely when Devil was the first to come under pressure. But he stayed on gamely to master Nina Bailarina by half a length, the pair seven lengths clear of the third. Devil could be aimed at the Group 1 Criterium International, whereas another Head two-year-old, the Kingman filly Khayzaraan, could be heading for the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac following her victory at Chantilly last Saturday.

The five-runner Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte went to the Henri-Francois Devin-trained Doctor Dino filly Villa Rosa.
