THE Japan Cup is the likely aim for Italian colt Dylan Mouth, winner of the Group 1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club at San Siro last Sunday.
Trained by Stefano Botti, the three-year-old son of Dylan Thomas has only been beaten once – when unplaced in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot – and has won all seven of his starts in Italy.
Again partnered by Fabio Branca last Sunday, Dylan Mouth defeated the five-year-old Duca Di Mantova by four lengths, with former Italian Derby winner Biz The Nurse a distant third.
The only other two three-year-olds to have won the 12-furlong Gran Premio in the past 10 years are Shirocco and Novellist, both of whom went on to further international success.
There were two Irish-bred Group 3 winners on the San Siro card. Harlem Shake, a three-year-old gelding by Moss Vale, won the five-furlong Group 3 Premio Omenoni with ease. The winner was bred at Derek Veitch’s Ringfort Stud in Rhode, Co Offaly, and raced seven times for Ger Lyons without winning as a two-year-old. He was sold at Tattersalls last October for 22,000gns.
John McLoughney, a client of the Irish National Stud, bred the very smart Fontanelice, winner of the one-mile Group 3 Premio Dormello for two-year-old fillies.
