EVE Johnson Houghton’s stable stalwart What About Carlo continues to pay his way. Now a six-year-old, he liked the ground more than any of his four rivals in the Listed bet365 Stakes – Mount Logan got loose and was withdrawn, joining two other absentees – and picked off the front-running Restorer before galloping away from Arthenus and Best Of Days.
The time was nearly 10 seconds slower than standard and several shrewd onlookers made What About Carlo 5/2 joint-favourite as the rain continued to fall. It was a modest race for the grade but he is a doughty campaigner and all of his last three wins have come over 10 furlongs here.
ATTRACTIVE RIDES
Charlie Bishop is picking up attractive rides outside the Mick Channon stable and made no mistake with a gilt-edged opportunity.
“You can put What About Carlo where you want in a race, he loves the ground, loves the track and, although this was his first win in a listed race, there’s no reason why he can’t hold his own in group company when the ground is as soft as that,” the jockey said.
