AT Goodwood, John Gosden’s 6/4 favourite Remote failed to overcome an absence of nearly two years in the Listed 888sport Festival Stakes over 10 furlongs. He dropped out in the closing stages and it was left to David Simcock’s The Corsican (7/2) to stay on strongly for Jim Crowley and beat Educate by two lengths.

There were too many disappointments to go overboard with compliments but The Corsican is progressive and holds entries in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot.

The Listed Tapster Stakes over a mile and a half went to Roger Varian’s 7/2 shot Ayrad in the hands of Graham Lee. He will no doubt be stepped up to group company again though the feeling was that Amanda Perrett’s Eye Of The Storm, sold out of Ballydoyle over the summer, might well have won had Pat Dobbs kicked on strongly when taking it up six furlongs out. Eye Of The Storm, whose one eye does him proud, will be aimed at the Goodwood Cup.

BEVERLEY

At Beverley, long-time Godolphin stalwart Simon Crisford won the Brian Yeardley Continental Two Year Old Trophy Conditions Stakes with First Selection, 3/1, who was just over a length too good for Lathom.

The trip was five furlongs but Crisford expects the son of Diktat to stay six with ease and the Coventry enters calculations.

Michael Dods and Paul Mulrennan, still on a high following stable star Mecca’s Angel’s win at Longchamp, go from strength to strength and won the Hilary Needler Trophy with 9/4 favourite Easton Angel. On this evidence there is every reason to go for the Queen Mary at the royal meeting.

Tynan’s raid

FETHARD trainer Matty Tynan pulled off a successful raid at Leicester on Monday. Tynan sent over three horses to the meeting, headed by his stable star Maontri who won a fillies’ handicap by two lengths under jockey Cam Hardie. A multiple Dundalk winner last year, Maontri was rated over 100 at her peak but ran off a turf mark of just 79 at Leicester.
