RICHARD Hannon senior was well used to landing big sales races and Richard junior demonstrated similar ability as Tangled, backed from an early morning 12/1 in places, took the opening Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes at 15/2.

The field of 19 split into two groups and for quite a while it looked as if the gamble of the race, 3/1 favourite Hey Jonesy, would prevail towards the stands’ side.

However, he was out on his own as challengers arrived on the opposite wing, where Tangled burst through between horses for Sean Levey to hit the front and hold Great Prospector by a neck with Hey Jonesy third.

Before playing up at Goodwood, Tangled – a son of the sadly departed Society Rock – had shown at Newmarket that he stays seven furlongs. However, he also has the speed for six and that was much in evidence here.

“He’s in great form and I think he’ll be at least as effective over seven,” Levey said. “He’s done it well today on ground which hasn’t changed much and is still quite tacky.”
