THE remarkable sprinter Take Cover, still very speedy at 10, made every yard in the Group 3 Dubai International Airport World Trophy Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, passing the post three-quarters of a length in front of Cotai Glory with the penalised Muthmir third.

This was Take Cover’s 13th victory from 40 outings for trainer David Griffiths. The abandonment of the Ayr Western Meeting meant things worked out well for regular jockey David Allan, who was able to switch to Newbury.

Caspian Prince missed the kick whereas Take Cover, 8/1, was out in a flash. Cotai Glory chased him throughout, while Muthmir found trouble before keeping on well.

“I don’t know what to say,’’ Griffiths said. “He’s an absolute legend. He’s won four listed races, two Group 2s, a Group 3 now and been placed in a Group 1. David gets on so well with him, so it was lucky for us Ayr was off.”

GARFIELD ON THE MARK

Rookie trainer George Scott enjoyed his biggest success to date when James Garfield, in the Bill Gredley colours, stayed on just too strongly for Invincible Army in the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes over six furlongs.

Briefly it looked as if Charlie Hills’ Nebo might prevail but Frankie Dettori, making good ground from half-way on James Garfield, 100/30, took it up and went on to win well from Invincible Army. Nebo held third, the form paying a big compliment to Sir Michael Stoute’s Expert Eye, who had James Garfield back in fourth at Glorious Goodwood.

ENCOUNTER

The Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup Stakes over 11 furlongs went to David Simcock’s Desert Encounter and Sean Levey, who got up to beat recent Windsor winner Second Step by a neck with Godolphin’s Secret Number third.

Andrew Balding won the valuable 10-furlong handicap with the hitherto luckless Brorocco, who led a furlong out and held Fidaawy by a length. Punters did well to make the first two 8/1 co-favourites.

King dominates at Newmarket

AT Newmarket, the Betfred Cesarewitch Trial was dominated by Alan King, responsible for the first two as Who Dares Wins and Tom Marquand got up to beat 9/2 favourite Coeur De Lion. Fourth in the Chester Cup and third in the Ascot Stakes, the winner may improve the poor record of trial winners in the famous marathon itself.
