THERE was a double for Irish-trained runners at Ayr this week, kicked off by Garvan Donnelly’s Plough Boy.

Ridden by Ben Curtis, the seven-year-old took a six-furlong handicap at the Scottish track on Tuesday to record his third win of the year and 11th in all.

Later on the card, Adrian Keatley’s John Honeyman (7/2f) recorded a comfortable success in a 10-furlong handicap in the hands of promising apprentice Ben Coen.

The aforementioned pair were both fancied to each make it a quick double when making quick reappearances in separate races at Ayr on Wednesday but both failed to do so - Plough Boy trailing in last of four under a 6lb penalty in a five-furlong handicap while John Honeyman was denied by a neck in a nine-furlong handicap

There were two other Irish-trained horses who finished second on the Ayr Wednesday card - Pat Murphy’s Koybig (11/1) who was denied by former Jim Bolger inmate Club Wexford in a mile handicap and Keatley’s Mo Henry (11/4), who was just touched off in a six-furlong handicap.

At Goodwood on Thursday, owner/breeders Anthony and Sonia Rogers enjoyed a notable success with Magnolia Springs, who ran out a comfortable winner of the Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes. The Shamardal filly is in training with Eve Johnson Houghton.
