THE Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld Greenham Stakes at Newbury made little impression on the Qipco 2,000 Guineas market. However, George Scott’s James Garfield won tidily for Frankie Dettori and accounted for Expert Eye, ante-post favourite many months ago after winning the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.

Sir Michael Stoute’s horse disappointed in the Dewhurst and was uneasy in the market here, drifting out to 7/4. He never quite picked up but was beaten only three parts of a length.

Hey Gaman led early before Dettori, coming towards the stands’ side, coaxed the most telling run from the winner. The bookmakers were not overly impressed and James Garfield could be backed at 25/1 for the first colts’ classic afterwards.

Newmarket trainer Scott is keen to take on the best with Bill Gredley’s Exceed And Excel colt, as is Dettori, though James Garfield’s entry in the Duke Of York Stakes hints strongly at shorter trips.

Expert Eye had James Garfield several lengths behind at Goodwood and Stoute did not appear too disappointed but the choice of which Guineas to go for has yet to be made.

Mick Channon, who sent out five winners the day before last Saturday, added the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes, the old Fred Darling, with 10/1 shot Dan’s Dream.

The winner, a daughter of Cityscape, was hampered early on but made relentless headway for Silvestre de Sousa and led 120 yards from home, pulling just over a length clear of Tajaanus with Dance Diva right behind. Roger Charlton’s 7/4 favourite Gavota was very disappointing and beat only two home.

Channon has never won the Newmarket 1,000, despite training many talented fillies; indeed, this was his fifth Fred Darling success. Dan’s Dream is entered at the Curragh but would need to be supplemented for Newmarket, where the top price is 20/1.

“We’ve thought a lot of her for a long time,” the trainer said. “It’s up to the owners where we go and I hope it’s the Guineas. She’s a smashing filly and that race has long been an ambition of mine.”
