CAREFUL note should be made of jockey David Egan, especially while he can still claim 7lb. The son of John Egan and Sandra Hughes won the fillies’ handicap at Chelmsford on Sunday on Gay Kelleway’s Stosur, having led fully five furlongs from home before holding Bint Dandy and champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa, no less, by a head in a driving finish.

Kelleway is one of several trainers at Newmarket and beyond to have noticed the youngster, who followed up for her on 22/1 chance Ubla at Kempton on Wednesday. He was also successful on Paul D’Arcy’s Anastazia at Yarmouth last week.

Irish success around the quieter venues in Britain, with Gordon Elliott the clear front-runner, is not confined to NH racing. On Monday, Co Tyrone trainer Lee Smyth sent Norville over to win a Class 6 seven-furlong handicap at Ayr at 15/2. All of jockey Paul Mulrennan’s hard work is paying dividends; having landed a lucrative double at the Curragh recently, he was booked for the winning ride on Norville, as well.
