7:37 BREEDERS’ CUP

TURF SPRINT (GRADE 1)

(3YO+) 5F ATR/RUK

THE purists lament that there are too many races at the Breeders’ Cup. You can have the Dirt Mile, a ridiculous everybody-gets-a-ribbon offering, but, at least for this year, the turf sprint is as good as they come.

Lady Aurelia and Marsha, a nose apart in the Nunthorpe, square off again. Now, that’s a thrill. Two of the best sprinting turf fillies touch gloves again while taking on the boys. Now, that’s what a championship day is meant to represent.

Toss in world record holder Disco Partner (he ripped six furlongs in 1m 05 and change in June), his stablemate, Pure Sensation, Cotai Glory, who’s run three times since finishing third in the Nunthorpe, previous winner Mongolian Saturday, 17-time winner Hogy and Washington DC and, well, this is exactly what the Breeders’ Cup hoped when it added races – international stars doing what they do best.
