BREEDERS’ CUP

JUVENILE FILLIES’

(1m 0.5f, dirt, 7.00pm)

NO European-trained horses, but a big moment for a European-born trainer in Simon Callaghan, son of former Newmarket handler Neville. His Moonshine Memories, part owned by a certain ‘Mrs John Magnier et al, is a hot favourite. No wonder. She is already a dual Grade 1 winner in the Del Mar Debutante and the Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita. She has loads of pace but sees out the trip well and has clocked good times.

BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE

(1m 0.5f, dirt, 10.58pm)

U S Navy Flag is a tip-top juvenile. O’Brien will set many records before he retires, but training a horse to land the top-level triptych of the Middle Park, Dewhurst and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on dirt would be something special.

Is he as good as the brilliant juvenile Johannesburg, the winner of this race at Belmont in 2001? Yes. Is he as likely to take to dirt? Maybe not; he’s a son of War Front, which is good, but the dam, Misty For Me, was a very smart turf horse and is by Galileo. Johannesburg’s sire (Hennessy) and damsire (Ogygian) were both dirt horses. Still, U S Navy Flag has the run style to cope.

The regular author of this column is keen on Bolt d’Oro who times out as a spectacular athlete. The son of Medaglia d’Oro ran a huge figure in the Grade 1 Front Runner at Santa Anita, and won a Grade 1 here before that. If he doesn’t fire, Keeneland winner Free Drop Billy will look to take advantage. He isn’t as fast, but owns a nice finishing kick.
