OFF the back of near faultless form since April, the High Chaparral filly Youngstar franked her Queensland Oaks favouritism with a win in the 2,200 metre Group 1 at Doomben, albeit by the barest of margins from her stablemate, the Ocean Park filly Another Dollar.

Handling the slow conditions with ease, Youngstar swooped late on Another Dollar as the Myboycharlie filly Sheezdashing dove through on the inside capturing third, though a half-head from the winner. Trained by Chris Waller, it was his third win in the race over the past four years following success with Winx and Egg Tart.

“It was a bit like a bicycle race the way they were changing positions. They were wheeling around and she’s gone from a perfect spot one off the fence then shunted three and four wide,” said Waller.

“They took off very early and she needed all of her qualities to come back on the line.”

Youngstar is out of the Irish-bred Danehill mare Starspangled, and was sold for A$200,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale. She has now started seven times, winning her past four straight, and may yet head to the Queensland Derby in two weeks with Waller keeping both Youngstar and Another Dollar in the Derby field at first acceptances.
