GRAHAM Motion decided to duck Tepin again with Miss Temple City. And, yet again, the conservative approach wound up as an aggressive triumph as the filly vanquished the boys in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on Saturday.
Ridden by Edgar Prado for The Club Racing, Allen Rosenblum and Sagamore Farm, the four-year-old daughter of Temple City hadn’t won since she took on the boys the last time, winning the Makers 46 Mile at Keeneland in the spring.
Prado, aboard for the first time, placed Miss Temple City in a perfect spot, outside, stalking longshot Pleuven. When it was time, Miss Temple City pounced and held off onrushing favourite Ironicus by a neck. Since the Makers Mark win, Miss Temple City finished fourth in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, fourth in the Diana and fifth in the Ballston Spa. After those three losses, Motion went back to his old standby, Prado.
“We felt we had to do something different after her last two races. It was tricky this weekend because there’s a lot of people everywhere, but I’ve had so much luck with Edgar. It was kind of a no-brainer going with Edgar,” Motion said. “She’s trained unbelievable, I worked her at Fair Hill on the turf course and she was spectacular. The losses were tough because there was a frustration knowing how good she is. I felt like I was letting her down. I genuinely felt like that.”
