THE Irish-bred Faufiler earned her first graded stakes win by taking the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap Arlington Park last Saturday. Owned by Flaxman Holdings, the homebred handled six rivals for jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. and trainer Graham Motion.
Faufiler arrived here last autumn, and offered two disappointing efforts against Grade 3 competition. Freshened from November to February, the five-year-old mare upset the Sandy Springs at Gulfstream in February, followed that with a game second, beaten a half-length by Nancy From Nairobi, in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine at Santa Anita. A fifth against Grade 1 competition in the Just A Game solidified a drop in class and Faufiler came through with her sixth career win.
By Superman, out of Wonder Woman (as they say in America), Faufiler is by Galileo and out of 2003 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Six Perfections.
Thirteen days after winning and getting claimed, Greengrassofwyoming rallied to win the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes on the Arlington card. The six-year-old son of Quest changed hands for $62,500 from Mike Tomlinson to Mike Maker on June 26th. Maker, notorious for successful claims, wheeled him back in the $100,000 stakes. Three noses separated Greengrassofwyoming, O’Prado Ole, Pumpkin Rumble and Arlington Million winner The Pizza Man.
Now owned by Michael Hue, Greengrassofwyoming increased his career earnings to over $400,000.
Kasaqui added to the international flare of Arlington Park’s Saturday stakes race bonanza, taking the Grade 3 Arlington Handicap for Wimborne Farm and trainer Ignacio Correas IV. Bred in Argentina, the six-year-old son of Lasting Approval won for the second time since being imported by Diane Perkins.
Born in Argentina, Correas held a private job with Sagamore Farm in Maryland until losing that job last year. With a couple of horses and looking for a break, Correas found one when Perkins reached out. Perkins, who built Wimborne Farm into one of the world’s leading breeders and knew Correas since he was six years old, picked up the phone and called Correas.
“If I have something to say about Diane, it is she is always better in the bad moments than she is in the good ones,” Correas said. “I’ve had a couple bad moments in my life and she showed up out of nowhere, just to throw me a hand and help me. Like last year, I was here with three horses and she flew from Florida. I didn’t even know she was here. She gave me a call, asked if I was going to be at the races. I said, ‘why?’ She said, ‘I came from Florida and I want to claim a horse for you.’ We claimed the horse, who wasn’t very good, but it was just to help me move on.”
Kasaqui is very good, earning his first stakes win for Wimborne and Correas.
Effinex again
Effinex won his second straight Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park for Tri-Bone Stable and trainer Jimmy Jerkens. The five-year-old son of Mineshaft won four races last year and finished second behind American Pharoah in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
One Mean
Derby winner
One Mean Man ousted 10 rivals in the Grade 3 American Derby, capping off Arlington’s stakes skein. Trained by Bernie Flint, the son of Mizzen Mast rallied to win by a half-length for L T B Inc and Hillerich Racing.
