LARRY Jones knew what was in store. The veteran trainer readied Street Band for another clash in Parx’s co-feature, the Grade 1 Cotillion.

“It’s the best filly race of the year,” Jones said.

Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress broke from the rail while stretching out from a tough loss going seven furlongs in the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga. Horologist rode a four-race win streak into her Grade 1 stakes debut. Guarana had already done the impossible, winning two Grade 1 stakes races in just her second and third career starts for Chad Brown. Bellafina won the Santa Anita Oaks in April and had chased hard in the Kentucky Oaks and Test for California-based Simon Callaghan. Jaywalk was crowned champion last year. And then there was hard-hitting, well-travelled Street Band, who had rumbled with the best in the Kentucky Oaks and Alabama.

Jones knew the daughter of Istan had her work in store.

“It’s a tough spot,” Jones said. “We have to hope everything goes well and she gets the trip.”

Like she was pulled by a magnet.

Sophie Doyle guided the chesnut filly from 10th to first to draw off by two and a quarter lengths over the previously undefeated Guarana and the upstart Horologist. Owned by Ran Francis, MyRaceHorse Stable, Jones and his wife, Cindy, Street Band garnered her first Grade 1 stakes score in her third attempt and 12th career start.

“We know we’re fit. We’re probably looking at a lack of miles though from the last race to here, but by design. We haven’t trained her as hard,” Jones said before the race. “She still comes in with only two works. We’re finding out that we don’t need to work her every week. We’ll work her one week, skip the next and she doesn’t seem to get as rank on us that way. And that’s the way Sophie is liking her.”

Doyle earned her first Grade 1 stakes race win.
