Misleading readily went clear for William Buick to account for Aussie Ruler and the 5/2 favourite Dark Profit, also owned by Mrs Hay, who has poured a great deal of money into bloodstock over the past few years and deserved a success of this nature.

“He’s one to take a bit of time with because he’s raw and immature,’’ Chapple-Hyam said. “We’ve always thought quite a bit of him and I did say to Mrs Hay not to run them both (the favourite is trained by Charlie Hills) because he’s pretty decent. He’s quite well entered up here but is qualified for premiums and will go to France in due course.’’

FAVOURITE BACKERS

It was nearly a perfect day for Chapple-Hyam and Mrs Hay because Buckstay looked the winner when looming up to take over in the bet365 Stakes over a mile. However, favourite backers were in urgent need of a lift and it arrived courtesy of Extremity and Ryan Moore, who ranged alongside and just got the better of the argument by a short head. The winner was returned at 3/1 and was cheered to the echo.

“Ryan told his agent he wanted to be on Extremity next time after he’d finished third in a race he won at Sandown,’’ smiled successful trainer Hugo Palmer. “He loves fast ground and we might go for that mile and a quarter race at the International meeting in Turkey because it’s worth a lot of money.’’

Dandy Nicholls can still train sprint handicappers as well as anyone and the veteran Inxile, no back number at nine, made all for Tom Queally at 20/1 in the multi-runner five-furlong event which rounded things off. Queally has been quiet since turning freelance but immediately accepted the ride following Paul Hanagan’s fall and made all on the 20/1 chance to beat another outsider Cheworee by three-quarters of a length.
