NEVER use a superlative they say, nothing in life justifies a superlative. But then there was last weekend, when Willie Mullins unleashed some of the phenomenal firepower housed in Closutton.

It was more a case of never use a superlative because you’ll have to use a better one next time.

Last Saturday’s action began with Tell Us More sauntering to his first hurdle win at Gowran. He looked pretty good, two wins totaling 23 lengths, the sky could be the limit. But that was only the beginning.

Then came Douvan, where did he come from? Another very classy performance. He could be anything.

Ballycasey may not be among the very top horses in the yard but he was spectacular over some of his fences in an accomplished win.

Faugheen was pretty much faultless too at Ascot, even if tougher tasks lie ahead.

And then on Sunday, there was Vautour. It’s difficult to recall a more accomplished round of jumping by a novice on his first run over fences in recent years. Sprinter Sacre possibly but Vautour looked as though he’d been jumping fences all his life. Even if the last two winners of the Champion Chase were still on course for the race, they would have to fear Vautour.

On to Thurles on Thursday and Un De Sceaux was so nearly awesome. His performance could have been just one word - “wow”. And there’s still many more to make their debut. It’s only November - get the dictionary out.

Around the time Vautour was giving his exhibition at Navan, Jenson Button was collecting the Formula 1 Drivers Championship. Two sizeable diamonds glistened in each ear. But you’d rather have the equine diamonds in the Mullins yard.

All Willie is missing is Nicole Sherzinger drenched in champagne.
