MANY congratulations to Comber-born National Hunt jockey Peter Buchanan on recording a career first treble at Kelso last Saturday.

The three horses are all trained by Lucinda Russell and two of the trio are Irish-bred geldings by Milan who started their careers in point-to-points here. One For Arthur, the middle leg of the treble, made his first public appearance at Largy in April 2013 when fifth in a four-year-old maiden.

The six-year-old, who won three hurdle races in succession early this year, was running for the first time over fences last Saturday when beating the Brian Hughes-ridden Seldom Inn by two lengths. The treble provided half of Buchanan’s total for the season.

Also on the mark at Kelso was the Denis Macauley-bred Gold Futures who was winning for the third time over the bigger obstacles when justifying favouritism by a length in the three and a quarter mile handicap chase. Unfortunately, the Gold Well six-year-old was the last foal out of his dam Don’t Discount Her (by Millfontaine).

Hughes’ campaign has been going along steadily and he moved on to the 44-win mark at Fakenham on Wednesday when landing the two and a half mile handicap hurdle on the David Thompson-trained Bowdler’s Magic.
