FOR the second time in three years, Barry McHugh won last Saturday’s Listed Redcar Two Year Old Trophy on a horse trained by his boss, Richard Fahey.

In 2017, the pair combined to strike with the 4/1 favourite, Darkanna, and this time their winner was the even shorter-priced market-leader, Summer Sands (11/8), one of three horses in the race for the Co Louth-born trainer, who was bringing up a treble at the north Yorkshire track. McHugh had been on board the Coach House colt when he finished third (at 100/1) in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes just a week earlier

The Co Tyrone-born jockey went on to complete a double on Saturday on the James Fanshawe-trained 11/4 favourite Olympic Conqueror in the 10-furlong handicap.

At Newcastle on Monday, he again rewarded favourite backers when landing the seven-furlong handicap on the Tracy Waggott-trained Billy Wedge.

Hughes’ winner

In the period under review, Brian Hughes rode one winner at Hexham last Friday week, Patsy Cosgrave recorded a double at Wolverhampton on Saturday and Deckie Lavery landed the bumper on Tuesday to notch up his seventh success of the season.

No doubt his feat will be well-covered elsewhere, but congratulations to Letterkenny’s pony racing sensation Dylan Browne McMonagle on recording his first racecourse success at Navan on Wednesday on the Joseph O’Brien-trained Jumellea.

The 16-year-old jockey also had a ride in the concluding 10-furlong handicap, but watched on from behind as Billy Lee won on the three-year-old Mukhadram colt Bear Claws, who is trained for owner/breeder Madeline Burns by Caledon’s Andy Oliver.
