THE late Winged Love sired three winners over four days last week, the treble being brought up at Fairyhouse on Sunday by Bless The Wings in the Bar One Racing Porterstown Handicap Chase.
Owned by Adrian Butler and Ward Union joint-Master Stephen O’Connor, sponsors through The Underwriting Exchange of trainer Gordon Elliott’s Cullentra House yard, the 10-year-old bay gelding was bred by Doncaster Bloodstock Sales horses in training agent Caroline Kenneally during her days at Scarvagh House.
Bless The Wings is the first of six foals out of the Mandalus mare Silva Venture who was placed over hurdles. Her 2006 produce, the Flemensfirth gelding Flemi Two Toes, who changed hands three times on four visits to the sales ring, has won four times for trainer Sarah Humphrey and is a most consistent sort. Silva Ventura then had four fillies in a row by Flemensfirth, Cloudings, Beneficial and Busy Flight. From the family of Mysilv, she is still alive but hasn’t had a foal since 2010.
Up until June 2014, Bless The Wings was trained by Alan King and had his first run in a bumper under Downpatrick-born Gerard Tumelty. He won four chases for the Barbury Castle trainer.
He has now run 18 times for Elliott, winning a handicap hurdle at Hexham last October in the colours of Richard Gilbert. Due to go to Doncaster’s May Sale this year, he changed hands in the yard and, on Sunday, was winning on his seventh outing for his new owners.
On Saturday, Wings Attract landed the novices’ two-mile, three-furlong handicap chase at Doncaster for the Chris Bealby yard. The six-year-old won a novice hurdle at Fakenham in October. He was purchased privately last winter from Trevor Horgan for whom he had finished second in a five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Lisronagh in November 2014.
Seven foals
Wings Attract was bred by John McAleese and is the fourth of seven foals out of the Phardante mare Huncheon Siss who was placed in a bumper, four times over hurdles and won a point-to-point.
The best of her previous produce was the 2007 Winged Love gelding Walden who won three point-to-points from 11 starts (rarely being out of the first three) and a maiden hunters’ chase at Downpatrick in May 2014. Sadly, he was killed in a fall at Musselburgh in February.
Spookydooky initiated the Winged Love treble last Thursday week when winning the near two-mile, seven-furlong handicap chase at Newbury on his second start over fences.
Bred by Paul McWilliams, the seven-year-old bay gelding began his racing career in the care of Adrian Maguire for whom he claimed a five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Kilworth in March 2013. He won two handicap hurdles early this year.
Spookydooky is the fourth of seven foals out of the King’s Ride mare Kiora Lady who was placed twice in bumpers and once over hurdles. She has bred three other winners, all by Winged Love, viz the 2004 mare Premier Victory whose five victories included two Grade 3 hurdles, the 2006 mare Roisin Dubh who won a bumper and a hurdle and the 2007 gelding Firebird Flyer who has seven successes to his credit.
Hugh Suffern, who stood Winged Love, reports that all those who have come to inspect the stallion’s replacement at Tullyraine House Stud, the four-time Group 1 winner Conduit, have been impressed by the 10-year-old son of Dalakhani.
