RODNEY Arthur saddled his second winner of the season (from just four runners) at Kirkistown on Saturday, the victory of newcomer Universal Wren in the Tattersalls mares’ maiden being greeted with delight by members of the Smalls Diamond Syndicate.

“The syndicate was formed in the local pub,” explained Rodney. “They knew this mare was out in a field doing nothing so decided to buy her as a fun horse. Although she’s seven making her debut, I’d like to think there is improvement in her and she’ll go for a winners’ race next. She’s a typical Winged Love mare.”

Universal Wren, who completed a double at the North Down meeting for her rider Noel McParlan, was bred by John McAleese out of the unraced Fourstars Allstar mare Waterland Gale, a half-sister to that great Northern favourite Huncheon Paddy (by Bob’s Return).

The best of the dam’s produce to date is Universal Soldier (by Winged Love), the winner of two hurdles, a chase and two hunters’ chases.
