AIDAN O’Brien and Ryan Moore proved an irresistible combination at the Curragh last Saturday winning both group races as part of a four-timer.
Lancaster House (110+) recorded back-to-back wins in the Group 3 Gladness Stakes with a comfortable two-and-a-half-length victory over Current Option (104).
In contrast to last year’s victory where he made all the running, Ryan Moore was happy to sit midfield allowing the race to develop in front of him without giving the leaders too much leeway.
Passing the two-furlong marker, the son of Galileo was encouraged to join issue, a task he managed easily, and the partnership were soon clear of the field to take Lancaster House’s form figures over course and distance to 121, the defeat coming at the hands of Group 1 winner Romanised.
Broome (112) made the step up from listed class to Group 3 level in the Alleged Stakes but had to work harder than he had at Naas 20 days previously.
In fact, the victory looked most unlikely turning for home as Ryan Moore was already beginning to ask questions of his mount with no immediate response.
Meanwhile, the strong-travelling Thundering Nights (109) set sail for home in the hands of Shane Cross, quickening to lead deep into the final furlong. Moore, however, had now conjured a run from his mount enabling the son Australia to sweep by in the shadows of the post to make it two-from-two for the season.
The closing sectional of 34.65 seconds, albeit compared to the maiden (35.75 seconds), illustrates that the front two had finished rapidly, which is further supported by the distance back to the third Up Helly Aa (104).
Of the two, Thundering Nights is likely to represent the better betting proposition, especially if dropped slightly in trip where her sharp turn-of-foot will be more of a weapon. Helvic Dream (104) came from the furthest back to post another good effort over a course and distance that has produced his best performances.
