THE field for today’s Racing Post Trophy lacks a fair bit of lustre and there appears to be no talking horse like Motivator or St Nicholas Abbey among the staying two-year-olds.
Overall, after last week’s Future Champions Day at Newmarket, the two-year-old picture is a bit cloudy.
The Dewhurst winner is often the Guineas favourite but Belardo’s win didn’t impress all the big layers and there are five ahead of him in most Guineas markets.
Nevertheless, his Dewhurst win will probably make him the top two-year-old colt. Before his Dewhurst win, Belardo had finished behind both the top Hannon colts Ivawood and Estidhkaar at Newmarket and Doncaster earlier in the season. Between those races he beat Hawkesbury at Newbury, who didn’t really boost the form at Newmarket this week behind Fannaan. Somehow neither of last week’s Group 1 winners grabbed the attention as some of the recent winners have.
Currently, the Cartier Awards have Gleneagles as top two-year-old colt and top juvenile overall. However, his Irish form was in weak races and it’s hard to equate his Longchamp form with the top British races.
Until Together Forever last week, Ballydoyle had little success in the British two-year-old races with Highland Reel’s Goodwood the highlight.
The Racing Post ratings have Belardo on top, from The Wow Signal, then Ivawood and Charming Thought.
Tiggy Wiggy is the top filly with Cartier and Racing Post. Her win over the subsequent Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Cursory Glance rates as easily the best form. She confirmed that form in the Cheveley Park and even if she has stamina doubts for next year, she was easily the best two-year-old filly.
What’s more, the form worked out in the Marcel Boussac with Found’s victory and Anthem Alexander ran her race again in the Cheveley Park.
Overall, Tiggy Wiggy was certainly the most exciting two-year-old of 2014.
