THE millionaire lots kept coming at Tattersalls last week and it was a noted fact that Group 1 winners on the dam side were present in the majority of the top lots. Dank, Cassandra Go, Sky Lantern, Vadawina, Danedream and Attraction were all dams of millionaire lots. They fit the old ‘best to the best’ theory.

But you don’t have to look far to see another side to the coin. As we appoach Breeders’ Cup weekend, images from past years hit our screens. Who knows what the incredible Zenyatta, earner of over $7 million, would have made through a sales ring.

She was a bit of a freak on the racetrack, not reaching her peak until five. At stud, she has not been blessed with luck with two of her foals not making it to two years old.

She has two offspring of racing age, Cozmic One, a five-year-old by Bernardini, and Ziconic, a four-year-old by Tapit.

Her third foal, Z Princess (by War Front), died as a yearling after an accident. She was not covered in 2014 and has no two-year-old and her 2016 foal died.

Cozmic One has only got as close as fourth in four races and finished an unimpressive sixth and seventh in his only two races last year.

Zenyatta’s second foal, Ziconic, by Tapit, has become a bit of an object of derision with form figures of 3534239233.

Zenyatta had a Medaglia d’Oro filly in May this year, who may be a bit luckier, but her overall record at stud is a huge disappointment.
