And don’t be too hung-up about ‘demystifying’ the sport. It’s a red herring that our jargon is a barrier. All sports have their own language. If we make racing interesting and accessible, learning the language is part of the joy of the journey.

We should have more confidence in the breadth of our offering, the things we already do well and talk less about how the sport is promoted and more about the resources needed to promote it better.

As a father of a 6-year-old who is a sports mad boy and will watch racing on TV, I now see things from the child’s perspective. Racing does so much to put children off going racing and so little to attract them to it. Other sports are miles ahead at selling their sport to kids.

Racing is inherently a social sport and that should be embraced wholeheartedly, but unless we use these opportunities to engage, interact, entertain, educate and inform new racegoers, then they are never going to be long term converts. Some racecourses are missing with their current marketing strategies. Too often there’s a complete lack of promotion of the sport and little attempt to engage with a social audience on the day.
