As an industry we are like a family and I’m sure that everyone in the racing family is extremely sad to hear the news tonight of the passing of one of our own. One of the nicest men you’ll ever meet and certainly one of the greatest jockey’s we’ve ever seen. RIP Champ

Pat Smullen was just a brilliant bloke. We weren’t friends as such but every time I met him I admired his decency. He cared about his job, had great dignity and gave you confidence that all would be well. I wish I knew him better. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

A testament of the man who brought so much of us Joy, and left a positive mark in everyone he met. Pat Smullen was a man, which every other man, should strive to be like. He was a gentleman, a professional, he was humble. He has left the world a better for him being here.

I could never get my head around how Pat Smullen coped with what befell him in his prime. What he achieved throughout his illness was nothing short of incredible. Asidefrom being a world-class rider, that’s how I’ll remember him most. Beyond inspirational. Sleep well PJ Smullen.

I’m privileged to say that I called Pat my mentor, whenever I had a question Pat always had the answer, if I had a problem Pat had a solution. A champion inside the rails and a gentleman outside. RIP Pat, you will be forever remembered and sorely missed
