Disappointed, but not surprised, that a lot of criticism of racing’s return online tonight is derived from an idea that it’s a “toff” sport, that again it’s the rich looking out for their own interest- think some aspects of racing’s self-presentation can often be an own goal here.

For me personally the image of horse racing is stuck in the fifties, a little colour needs to be injected into the industry.

I think it would be good for the sport if during televised race meetings they had short docs on breeding, mares, foals, stallions etc, also what it takes to become a jockey, owner, breeder etc.

Perhaps commercialising trainers and jockeys as personalities. If you look at @FOBRacing

and @FrankieDettori for example. Social media presences with big personalities. Easier to pledge allegiance to and captivate a new audience.

What about giving every town or parish in Ireland a horse to follow and allow that place to market itself somehow when the horse runs? Would give people a real stake in following ‘our’ horse. Could help the tourism industry too.

Once you get into it via betting many of us fall in love with it for more than just that. Real challenge for racing is that for my generation it was the main/only real thing you could bet on, now so many options racing can pass the punter by to a great extent.

The whole shebang; it’s the myriad puzzles racing throws up. But people watching, the British class system writ large, trainers, jockeys, proper bookies; being on course. Studying form, watching the race unfold, sometimes exactly as you imagined. And the horses.

There is a reason why when people are asked of first memory of racing many say “having 50p on the national” or similar. It’s the bet not the stories or race itself.

It does annoy me when the majority of people I meet immediately remark “oh you like to gamble then” when I tell them I’m into horse racing! Based on the responses to it restarting this week from the ‘public’ - the sport clearly struggles to shake that tag.
